FastStone Image Viewer has a relatively simple Explorer-like interface, and has an appearance that is already familiar to Windows users. The program also supports lots of image formats, including raw files from many popular camera brands. The program also offers a host of simple editing options that you can apply to your pictures.
The program supports most image formats such as BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, PSD, EPS, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA), plus raw formats like CRW, CR2, NEF, PEF, RAF, MRW, ORF, SRF, ARW, SR2, RW2 and DNG.
Under Settings (F12) and RAW, you will find settings for raw files, here you can among other things choose the way raw files are displayed in the program.
FastStone Image Viewer does not offer advanced editing options, but has enough features for most people. The program has basic features like red-eye removal, cropping, resizing, comparison of images (up to four images at once), rotation, and colour adjustment. You can access editing capabilities via full-screen mode - by double clicking on a particular image, and then right click on the image.
You can resize the application window, to a size that fits, and the program also supports full screen.
The program has a pretty good full screen mode with many opportunities. You can right-click on a particular image and select Full Screen, or you can select Full Screen from the View menu at the top.
In full screen, you can move the cursors at the top corners of the application window, and you will then have an opportunity to navigate to other images or to other menus in the program.
With full screen mode you also get a number of options by right clicking on the image, including access to EXIF information, that is detailed information about the current image.
Full screen mode also has a useful zoom function. Click on the image and hold down the mouse and you can move around the image for a closer look at some parts of the picture. To leave the zoom function all you have to do is let go of the left mouse button. This is a useful feature for checking sharpness and detail of specific sections of an image.
You can create a slideshow via the menu button "Create and Slide Show". You get a separate window with the ability to select images, and adjust the display the way you want it.
FastStone Image Viewer has a batch feature that allows you to convert multiple images in the same process, or give them a new name. Select the Tools menu and click Batch. You get up a separate window for this, and can select images you want to convert or rename. You can choose to rename the files, or you can choose advanced options with the opportunity to edit multiple images in the same way.
FastStone Image Viewer does not have advanced editing features, but the advantages lie primarily that it easy to use and free. If are you looking for an advanced photo program, and which isn't too expensive, then we recommend Adobe Lightroom.
FastStone Image Viewer can be downloaded from their official website. The program supports Windows 98, ME, XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
