Getting to Know Your PC and Its Components

Circuit boards, microchips and cables. That's pretty much how everybody views the inside of a computer and technically speaking that's exactly what they are. However, every internal component inside a PC is integral in making sure it works correctly, whether it's the screen, processor, memory, or hard drive.

On this page you will find programs that can give you information about your PC, plus applications that can be used to test the performance and reliability of Windows and your PC.

These are programs that can give you detailed information about your PC.

System Information Viewer

System Information Viewer (SIV) is a program that shows detailed information about your computer. Here you will find information on Windows, hardware and network components.

The user interface can seem cluttered and disorganized first time you run the program, but this program is one of the most detailed on the market. You can find lots of menus and submenus on the bottom of the interface.

SIV does not need to be installed, simply download the ZIP file and unpack this into a separate folder, and double-click on the program file. Please note that it may take a relatively long time for the program to start, because the program collects information about your PC first.

Speccy

Speccy is a program of the developers behind the popular cleaning program CCleaner. Speccy is an advanced system tool for your PC.

 

You get detailed information about the hardware and software installed on your PC. Speccy supports Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, and it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. The program is also available as a portable version.

Belarc Advisor

Belarc Advisor creates a detailed profile of installed hardware and software on your PC. The result are displayed in your browser.

The program supports Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4, 2000, Server 2003, Server 2008, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, and both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.

HWiNFO

HWiNFO is a professional free utility that provides detailed information about your PC, and it can also be used to monitor various components in your machine.

The program is available in three editions HWiNFO (for DOS), HWiNFO (for Windows 32-bit) and HWiNFO (for Windows 64-bit) that support different versions of DOS and Windows.

User Benchmark

User Benchmark is a free application that shows benchmark status for the components in your PC. User Benchmark is aimed at the common user, and not engineers or specialists in hardware.

Rainmeter

Rainmeter is a different program that displays information about your computer on the Windows desktop, so you can see it the entire time. It shows things like memory usage and battery usage.

GPU-Z

GPU-Z is a program that provides detailed information about the video card in your PC.

SpeedFan

SpeedFan is a program that provides information about temperature and fans in your PC. With this program you can also control the fans. The use of this program depends however on whether the motherboard supports fan control, as not all manufacturers allow this.

System Stability Test

System Stability Test is a program that can be used to test the stability of a computer. The program is free and open source. 

3DMark11

3DMark11 is a benchmark program which can be used to measure PC performance and compared the performance of 3D graphics and how well the processor works under pressure. The program is available in both Advanced Edition and free Basic Edition.
