Glossary terms, covering electronic products with the letter M.

Miracast

Wireless sharing of audio/video from a mobile device (smartphone, tablet) to a TV, Blu-ray player, etc. Developed by the WiFi Alliance consortium and based on Wi-Fi Direct connectivity that allows it to be broadcast over existing networks.

Made for iPad

This logo indicates that an electronic accessory has been specifically developed for the iPad and its manufacturer certifies it meets Apple performance standards.

MKV (Matroska)

This universal audio-video container is able to contain absolutely all existing audio and video formats, including DivX, MPEG-4 H.264 1080p or 4K. Its structure allows it to host multiple video and audio streams and subtitles tracks and chapter points.

Macro Mode

Macro photography is to photograph objects closely. Most digital cameras have a dedicated mode, which shortens the distance in order to come as close as possible to the subject. SLR digital cameras require the use of a lens dedicated to this type of shot.

MD (Minidisk)

Music storage medium on the magneto-optical disc that is rewritable upto 1 million times. The signal is compressed to fit on a storage volume smaller than that of CD. MiniDisc offered a very satisfactory use for mobile devices.

MP3 (MPEG layer 3)

Compression standard and audio data transmission. This standard has revolutionized the music industry by allowing highly compressed data transfer over the Internet. The biggest brands now offer portable MP3 players.

MPEG

Standard compression and transmission of audio and video data. It involves compression of images in groups rather than individually. An MPEG stream includes reference images, descriptive frames and reconstructed images. Very sophisticated, it provides a very high compression ratio and requires a small storage space.

Megapixel

Unit resolution of the images produced by a digital camera sensor. It is equivalent to one million pixels.
