How to Use and Get the Most from VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player has long been one of the most popular multimedia players on the market. The program is free, it is open source, and it is easy to use. One of the advantages of this player is that it supports most video formats, without the need to install additional codecs.
VLC Media Player can play most videos, including incomplete or damaged files. The player can also access video files on ISO files, even if the underlying system does not support ISO files.

One of the features of VLC Media Player is that it ignores the zone distribution of DVDs. That means you can watch a movie, no matter which zone it belongs to.

VLC Media Player can also view streamed content. The player supports Direct Media Object (DMO), and can be used to watch DVB-C, DVB-T and DVB-S channels. It can be run directly from a memory stick, or an external storage device.

The program supports formats such as MKV, Ogg, Mov, FLAC, MPC, MPEG-1, H.265, WMV3 and VC-1. It also supports subtitles.
Streaming videos from YouTube
You can enter a YouTube link directly into VLC Media Player and play the video in the program. This is done via Media > Open Network Stream and then simply paste the YouTueb address, and click on the Play button.

Download YouTube Videos
If you want to download YouTube videos, this can easily be done with VLC Media Player. You start by copying the address of a particular video on, then run VLC Media Player select Media > Open Network Broadcasting.

Paste the YouTube address under Network tab, and then click Play. Select Tools and codec information. Copy the entire URL text at the bottom, and paste this text into the address field of your browser. You will then have access to the source file on the server to YouTube. Now you can just right click the video and choose Save, and save it on your PC.

Record video or audio
If you want to record video or audio that you're listening to right now, this can be done through View > Advanced Controls. You will then see a toolbar at the bottom of VLC window with the buttons "Record", "Take a snapshot", "Loop from point A to point B contiuously and "Frame by frame."

Record your desktop activities
You can use VLC Media Player to create a video of what you do on Windows. To enable this option select Media > Open Capture Device. Select Desktop from the drop down menu and Select the desired "frame rate" and then click "Convert." Choose video format, and where you want to save your recording and start. Select Stop when you're finished.

You can use VLC Media Player as a single podcast app. To access this option, you must first enable the playlist menu, unless this is already activated. Go to View > Playlist and select Podcast. This brings up a plus sign and can add the RSS for the podcast you want to add.
You can listen to internet radio via the Playlist menu. Go to View > Playlist > Internet and browse the stations under the menu.
Convert video to another format
You can convert a video file to another format. This is done via Media > Convert/Save. Browse the file you want to convert on your computer, then click on the Convert/Save button and choose what format you want to convert it to and where you want to save it onto your computer.

Click start to start converting.
VLC Media Player is available for free download from the official website.
