What To Do When Your Computer Will Not Start

What should you do if your laptop, tablet or other computer device completely fails to start? The problem may be a faulty battery or power cable to hardware failure or even a virus.

Here we will provide you with many useful tips to get your personal computer back up and running. What to do if your PC refuses to boot at all, or you see nothing but a black screen? There may be something wrong with the operating system, or a certain component inside your computer maybe at fault.
I'm not computer savvy, what should I do?
If you are not computer savvy, or for some other reason you do not want to fiddle with the computer and try and diagnose the problem on your own, then perhaps you shouldn't. In that case you should either send your computer in for repair at your local computer dealer, or contact the store where you purchased your computer, if the machine will not start. If your computer device is still under warranty take it back and they should fix or replace the product free of charge.
Fixing your personal computer may be easier than you think!
You can try the simple things first. Check that all the wires (both power cable and data cable) are not damaged and are correctly connected. If you have a laptop or tablet, you may find that your battery is dead. Batteries normally only last around 1 to 2 years depending on usage. To check if your battery is totally dead, remove it from the laptop and only use the power cable to see if it will fire up. If your computer successively starts up, then you know that your battery is dead.
Try a System Restore
If your computer does load up but fails to work properly it could be bad drivers, or bad software. You can try and revert your PC to an earlier time with Windows recovery. Windows recovery can be found in Control Panel – System and Security – Action Centre - Recovery – Open System Restore.
You may have a virus
It's probably unlikely that a virus is causing your computer not to start-up, but it's a possibility. You can create a crisis CD, if you suspect a virus has infected your computer.
Try and repair Windows
If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8, you can try pressing F8 during boot, to get up advanced boot menu. Which key to press may depend on the computer you have. You may find information about this in the manual that came with your personal computer.

If this does not work you will need to use the installation Windows 7 or Windows 8 disc that came with your PC, and choose to repair instead of install.
Use a third-party solution
Unfortunately, it often happens that an installation disc for Windows does not come with a new PC.

There are several third-party solutions, such as creating a DVD or a memory stick that can be used to start the computer up.

An example of such a third-party solution is Trinity Rescue Kit, which comes with several types of tools that can be used to save data from a PC that can not start up in a normal way.

Download an ISO file from this website and burn it on a CD or DVD, or you can install the tool on a memory stick.

When you start up a PC with Trinity Rescue Kit (CD, DVD or memory stick) and you get this screen:

Here you will get a few different choices to try and fix your PC.

Among these is the ability to reset Windows password, run a virus scan, or backup your PC. Furthermore, there is an option to create a crisis disk to recover lost partitions, and transfer files to other devices on a local network.
Lazesoft Recovery Suite
There is also another option, namely Lazesoft Recovery Suite. You can download it free from lazesoft.com.

You can use the program to burn a boot-CD/USB disk. Attempt to start the problem computer with this disk and you should then see this menu:

Here you have several choices, but if your PC will not start, you can choose Windows Recovery.
